Been there, played that!

Megapop’s Trolls vs Vikings bear more than just an uncanny resemblance to the Plants vs Zombies series, how few elements gives it an edge and provides entertainment

There are those who draw inspiration and there are some whose product ‘accidentally’ bear resemblance to another product. Now, we really don’t know which of the above two cases applies to Megapop’s Trolls vs Vikings. Any gaming enthusiast who has played PopCap’s Plants vs Zombies, especially the second part in the series, will easily tell you about the similarity between the two games.
This freemium game is set in a locality of characters called trolls, whose houses are being invaded by powerful vikings. As the gamer, you have to control and protect the trolls as they battle against the invaders. The gameplay is similar to other plant based games, especially Plants vs Zombies 2. The gamer’s chosen units are placed on the left hand side of the screen, while the Vikings appear one by one (and sometimes at one go) from the right hand side. Available Units have different features, like some can fire shots, some stones, some spit fire and even drag enemies under the ground to kill them. One of the important unit is the digger, who helps dig out moonstones, which can be used to buy more units. There are around 70 levels and the difficulty level keeps increasing everytime you beat the enemies.
Besides such units, the gamer is given special powers of the gods — like casting spells, including hurling a giant rock at an enemy or flinging a fireball at them. But hold on! These special powers are limited and can only be purchased through pricey in-app purchases. In fact, a whole bunch of unit types can only be purchased either through in-game gold or by spending real money (a few are exclusively reserved for in-app purchases). Like most freemium games, Trolls vs Vikings disappoints in this department.
On the technical front, the animation is very good and characters, well designed. The music is apt and so are the sound clips. The use of colours is also pretty interesting, with several shades of green and purple dominating the scene. But despite all this, we feel the gameplay could have been more exciting. Plus, the fact that PopCap keeps adding new updates to the PvZ series, might force a gamer to rethink their decision to try out this game. We honestly feel there is nothing to lose in this game, since it is a free buy. So go ahead and enjoy playing it, without thinking too much about the similarity with other games and other flaws. It’s not such a bad game, after all.
