Noted lyricist, filmmaker Nurul Haque dies at 78
Born in Jorhat in 1938, Haque had composed his first lyrics – two Hindi songs for an Assamese film called “Maak aru Morom” (directed by Nip Barua) when he was just 19.
Well-known lyricist and filmmaker Nurul Haque, who had composed over 500 Assamese and 200 Hindi lyrics – some of them also sung by legends Md Rafi, Bhupen Hazarika, Usha Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor among others – passed away in a private hospital in Jorhat late Friday evening following protracted illness. He was 78.
Born in Jorhat in 1938, Haque had composed his first lyrics – two Hindi songs for an Assamese film called “Maak aru Morom” (directed by Nip Barua) when he was just 19.
Since then he had composed as many as 542 lyrics in Assamese, two of which were sung by Md Rafi in the early 1960s, which also paved the way for then Jorhat-based music directors Jitu-Tapan to shift to Mumbai.

He also wrote over 200 Hindi songs, which were sung by many top singers including Mahendra Kapoor, Usha Mangeshkar, Shyamal Mitra, Anuradha Poudyal, Sadhana Sargam, Suresh Wadkar, Anup Jalota, Vinod Rathore, Arati Mukherjee and Zubin Garg, among others.
Haque, who wrote lyrics for many Assamese films including Manab aru Danab, Adalat, Abhijan, Marisika, Upagrah, Lalita, and Anutaap, also worked as assistant director in many films.
Haque, who was an employee of the state cooperative department, late also took to making tele-films and serials for Guwahati Doordarshan, as also several documentary films for different government departments.
