The popular song ‘Chaiya Chaiya’ composed by A.R Rahman for the film Dil Se continues to be widely celebrated. However, singer Sukhwinder Singh, who gave vocals for the dance number, recently revealed that he originally composed the hook of the song. He then presented it to Rahman, who loved the tune and decided to retain it in the final composition.

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Singh said, “I composed the tune originally known as Thaiya Thaiya and shared it with AR Rahman, who later transformed it into Chaiyya Chaiyya.” Singh, while singing the song Chaiyya Chaiyya, said, “I presented the tune like this to Rahman.”

Sukhwinder highlighted the importance of teamwork and acknowledged that he couldn’t take full credit for the song. He mentioned that a lot of people, including music directors and poets, are involved in the creation of a song.

He added, “This is the composition I shared with Rahman and that composition stuck with him and had so much effect on him that on that tune itself, Gulzar saab penned the lyrics. And it turned out to be really good. He has a very modest writing style.”

The song went on to become an iconic number in Bollywood, and Shah Rukh Khan’s and Malaika Arora’s dance atop a moving train is still remembered as something extraordinary and special. Gulzar had earlier revealed that when Shah Rukh heard the song’s lyrics, he didn’t want it to be performed by a group of fakirs in the background as originally planned and expressed his wish to dance on the song himself.

In an interview with Deccan Chronicle, Gulzar said, “Mani asked me if it is very high poetry, and I said yes. And this is how SRK tricked Mani and fulfilled his wish of dancing to the tune of Chaiyya Chaiyya, which became a hit number.” Sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi, Gulzar penned the lyrics of the song Chaiyya Chaiyya.
