Designed as a contemporary Mumbai fable, Mast Mein Rehne Ka makes you believe the cup is half-full even when things go horribly awry. With such optimism as its guiding principle, the movie follows the lives of a bunch of characters who are struggling to lead a better life in the metropolis. Stories of hope and resilience set in the densely populated Mumbai are not new for movie-lovers. But the film shifts its focus to the loneliness of the elderly to offer a fresh take about the city’s aloofness as well as generosity.

At the beginning of the movie, we meet widower Kamath (Jackie Shroff) trying to lead a disciplined life. By the end of the day, however, gnawing loneliness takes over, making him almost give up on life until he comes across another lonely soul in the city, Prakash Kaur Handa (Nina Gupta). Unlike surly Kamath, Prakash is spirited. She is happy-go-lucky, makes inappropriate jokes and uses expletives.

These two lonesome elders make their connection thanks to burglaries at their home. The thief happens to be an out-of-luck tailor Nanhe (Abhishek Chauhan). Nanhe is struggling to make ends meet and takes to petty crime. But he treats Rani, who lives on the street and does odd jobs, with kindness and respect.

As the movie tries to give a positive spin to the adversities of life in a metro, it underlines the goodness of people. Though at certain points the movie overdoes it, it matches the movie’s overall feel-good mood. Policemen are shown as softies. Nahne, who has run away from home, finds support from another poor street vendor. Non-judgemental Prakash says she loves people who are ‘dheela (oddballs)’. Prakash’s words also reflect the movie’s motto when she compared the zest for life with the uncontrollable drooling over raw mango smeared with salt.

Mast Mein Rehne Ka movie trailer:

Unlike the city of Mumbai, the movie adopts a languid pace. The story unfolds slowly as it reveals personal secrets and struggles. Yet, its characters are shown to cherish relationships, stealing some moments of fun and never losing hope.

As Kamath, Shroff delivers one of his finest performances in recent times, ably aided by Gupta. It was evident in the short film Khujli (2017) that they complement each other. They take their onscreen partnership forward in this feature. Other members of the cast, especially Chauhan and Monika too make an impression on screen.

Director Vijay Maurya, who has established himself as a fine screenwriter, brings in an authentic, lived-in feel to the storytelling as he takes us to the less-explored part of the city and makes us meet the fellow city-dwellers who live on the margins. Yet, he never lets go of a chance to evoke a feeling of hope. The film ends with the song ‘Phir se track pe aa jaati nayi naveli zindagi’ playing in the background as the post credits appear.
