Azaad movie review: Rasha Thadani, Aaman Devgan wasted in moth-balled film

Azaad movie review: Why are such films still being made in 2025? And is Abhishek Kapoor, who made the terrific ‘Kai Po Che’ and ‘Rock On’, really the director of this mothballed exercise?

azaad reviewAzaad movie review: The film launches Ajay Devgn’s nephew Aaman Devgan and Raveena Tandon’s daughter Rasha Thadani.

The deep bonds between a horse and their human have been at the centre of many wonderful films. Azaad, which has two men, senior and junior, vying for the affections of a beautiful beast, should have been double the fun. But this one, which launches Ajay Devgn’s nephew Aaman and Raveena Tandon’s daughter Rasha, turns out to be so dated that it appears to have been made in a time lag.

First off, the setting has been lifted from ‘Lagaan’– cruel zamindars helping pompous Englishmen lord over cowed villagers — with the addition of a few floggings, and loud proclamations of banishing the villagers to ‘Africa’ as bonded labour.

Second, the new kids, who both show promise, are wasted in insipid roles. The requirement of being able to ride is fulfilled well enough, if they are indeed the ones galloping and controlling bucking animals, rather than body doubles. But whatever happened to body language and delivery which belonged to the British era?

Ajay Devgn plays Vikram Singh–’ call me a baaghi not dacait’– who has been forced to leave the love of his life ( Diana Penty) in the clutches of the greedy zamindar’s ( Piyush Mishra) cruel son ( Mohit Malik, leaving an impact). Vicious floggings and blood-streaked backs are frequently on display. A silly White man casts his eye on Azaad. And the climax is a race, just like the cricket match in ‘Lagaan’, which decides the winner and loser.
