Four years after the historic success of actor Prithviraj Sukumaran’s directorial debut Lucifer, starring Mohanlal in the lead role, its sequel, titled L2E – Empuraan, officially began filming on Thursday. With Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and Indrajith Sukumaran reprising their respective characters from the first movie, Empuraan is one of the most highly anticipated films of recent times.
Prithviraj, Mohanlal, producer Antony Perumbavoor, and writer Murali Gopy participated in a ceremony organised today to mark the official commencement of the film’s production. “The cameras start rolling as #L2E – Empuraan starts shoot today,” Prithviraj and Mohanlal noted on their respective social media accounts.
Empuraan will be jointly produced by Antony Perumbavoor’s Aashirvad Cinemas and Lyca Productions, marking the latter’s entry into the Malayalam film industry. Recently, the makers had also released a promo officially announcing the return of Khureshi-Ab’raam aka Stephen Nedumpally (Mohanlal).
One of the biggest box office successes in Malayalam cinema, Lucifer was also remade in Telugu, titled GodFather, with Chiranjeevi, Nayanthara, and Salman Khan portraying the same characters originally played by Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, and Prithviraj, respectively, in the Malayalam version.
In May, Aashirvad Cinemas had shared a video showing Prithviraj along with Antony Perumbavoor, checking out possible locales in London for the big-budget film. In the video, Prithviraj was seen standing inside a building near a runway while explaining to those accompanying him how he was planning the shoot there. Sharing the video on Twitter, Antony noted: “#L2E EMPURAAN gaining momentum.”
Empuraan will also be released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi, alongside its original Malayalam version.
Mohanlal is currently gearing up for two highly ambitious films — Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Malaikottai Vaaliban and Barroz: Guardian of Treasures, where he will be making his directorial debut. While Barroz is likely to be released in December this year, Malaikottai Vaaliban will hit theatres on January 25, 2024.
