Prithviraj welcomes Ram Gopal Varma to the sets of Mohanlal’s Empuraan: ‘Nobody can take away what you’ve done for Indian cinema’

2002 was an important year for Malayalam cinema and Hindi cinema as it marked the debut of two actors in those industries. In December, Prithviraj Sukumaran was launched as an actor with Nandanam, and earlier that year, in April, Ram Gopal Varma’s Company marked Mohanlal’s debut in Bollywood. In a beautiful collision of these two worlds, RGV dropped by the sets of Prithviraj’s much-awaited Mohanlal film, Empuraan.

What resulted from the meeting was a mutual admiration club between RGV and Prithviraj, and a picture of Mohanlal in his character from Lucifer, Stephen Nedumpally. Sharing a selfie with his Company actor, RGV wrote, “Memories of COMPANY..Met the one and only Mohanlal after a long long time.”

RGV also shared an image with Prithviraj and wrote on X, “Me the DIRECTOR watching an ACTOR direct. Prithviraj sir, ⁩if you take away our job also, what will we do?” In his reply, Prithviraj wrote, “Nobody. NOBODY… can take away what you have done for Indian cinema Sir! Was a privilege to have you on sets!”

That’s not all, the Lucifer director also wrote a long post on Instagram talking about Ram Gopal Varma’s visit to the sets of Empuraan. “Like every filmmaker that’s grown up watching modern Indian cinema, I too, am hugely inspired by the craft of this legend,” wrote Prithviraj, going on to call RGV as ‘an absolute master’ who has left an indelible mark in cinema. “Truly one of the greatest ever this country has produced, it was a privilege to have you on sets and talk at length about art and cinema with you Sir. And oh..I cannot wait for that smashing ‘comeback’. Vintage RGV underworld!”

Here’s the note:

Prithviraj’s announcement about Ram Gopal Varma’s next, which might be in the familiar territory of the underworld, has piqued the interest of many who are sincerely hoping for the return of vintage Ram Gopal Varma.
