Mohanlal’s Empuraan gets OTT release date
Mohanlal and Prithviraj's Empuraan will begin streaming on JioHotstar, less than a month after its theatrical release.
Empuraan is still dominating the Malayalam box office.Superstar Mohanlal announced on Thursday that his latest film L2: Empuraan will begin streaming on JioHotstar from April 24, less than a month after its theatrical release.
Empuraan came out on March 27 and had to face backlash and controversy right out of the gate, due to its portrayal of the 2002 Gujarat riots. As pressure grew on the makers, the film was taken back to the edit table and certain scenes were cut to appease critics
Despite the cuts and the controversies, Empuraan has had a stellar run at the box-office, collecting more than Rs 250 crore worldwide.

However, many are still not happy with the narrative of the film such as R Sreelekha, who is a former IPS officer and a member of the BJP. While talking to Matrabhumi, she said, “While watching, I wondered many times if I should just walk out in the middle. When the movie Marco (2024) was released, people mainly criticised it for its violence. However, this movie also has similar levels of violence throughout, yet I haven’t heard anyone seriously speak out about it.”
On the other hand, actor-turned-politican Ganesh Kumar claimed a strike call by certain film bodies was part of a conspiracy against Empuraan and were only organised to serve certain people in power. He said, “The theme of Empuraan was somehow leaked, and some members of the Kerala Film Producers Association became aware of it. I suspect that they seized the opportunity to impress their political bosses by projecting themselves as those trying to stop the movie’s release.”
Following the release of Empuraan, the film’s co-producer Gokulam Gopalan came under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), while producer Anthony Perumbavoor received a notice from the Income Tax Department over financial transactions related to his earlier films Lucifer and Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea. The I-T Department also issued a notice to actor Prithviraj, seeking clarification about the remuneration he received for three films he starred in during 2022.
Apart from Mohanlal, the cast of the film includes Prithviraj Sukumaran, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Abhimanyu Singh, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Jerome Flynn, Andrea Tivadar, Saikumar, Baiju Santhosh, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Kishore.
