Mohanlal, who has been in the Malayalam film industry for nearly five decades and is among the greatest actors in India, recently shared why movies of today are not clicking with the audience. In a new interview, Mohanlal shared though the directors of today are good at their work, the subject of the films are not up to the mark. The actor even recalled his older days, when he worked in a wide range of films with good stories as well as shared why he is choosy about working with new directors.

Speaking to Galatta Plus, Mohanlal said, “The new generation watched older films, and when they compare the new films to it, they find more drama, sentiments, and humour. We got to work in some great films with great directors like Bharatan, Mani Ratnam, Padmarajan… who directed amazing stories. The new generation people didn’t have the chance to work with them. We have amazing directors, but the subject lacks context. I used to do commercial film, action film, comedy film… we have created that asset. It is like the deposit we made and we are surviving on the interest we are receiving.”

Mohanlal, who collaborated with Prithviraj Sukumaran for the 2022 film Bro Daddy, called him someone difficult to work with. The veteran star shared, “Prithviraj is an amazing director. He knows about the equipment, lense, actors, and he will keep asking for shots until he is convinced. It is quiet tough to work with him because you have to surrender yourself to him. He will keep bothering you until he gets his shot. You can’t have ego.”

The actor also praised director Blessy and called him an “amazing director.” He shared, “I have worked with him in so many films. His first film was with me. There are a lot of great directors.”

Sharing why he is not seen working with new directors, the actor said he does if the script doesn’t have Mohanlal in it. He said, “What goes wrong with them (directors) is when they come to me with scripts, I find Mohanlal in it, so I don’t take it up.”

The actor is currently gearing up for the release of Barroz, which will mark his directorial debut. The fantasy drama is all set to hit the theatres on December 25.
