Empuraan: Director Prithviraj Sukumaran teases a new force powerful enough to take the Khureshi-Ab’raam syndicate by its horns. Watch

Pointing out that Lucifer featured a complex world filled with several characters, actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran stated that such complexities would only deepen in Mohanlal's Empuraan.

“Towards the end of Lucifer, we were introduced to the Khureshi-Ab’raam underworld mega syndicate. After watching the film, we walked away believing that no force in the world was powerful enough to challenge them. But is that really the case? Or is it a misplaced assumption?” filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran asks, setting the stage for the arrival of L2E: Empuraan. From his words, it’s clear that the film’s universe is about to expand on a grand scale, introducing a new force — whether a person or a syndicate — capable of taking Khureshi-Ab’raam by the horns.

In a 142-second character reveal video, Prithviraj reintroduced his role as Zayed Masood from Lucifer (2019), stating, “In the first instalment of the franchise, we witnessed the Khureshi-Ab’raam nexus that infamously controls the global gold and diamond trade. Zayed Masood is the mercenary commando who led their hit group — or rather, their hit force. That was the only side of him that you saw in the film.”

He continued, “However, like every other character in this franchise — and like every character writer Murali Gopy has ever created — Zayed, too, has a past, a story and a world of his own.” He further revealed that Empuraan will offer a glimpse into Zayed’s history while also shedding light on how Khureshi-Ab’raam entered that world, ultimately forging an alliance with him.

Pointing out that Lucifer featured a complex world filled with several characters, exploring the intriguing dynamics unfolding between them, Prithviraj stated that such complexities would only deepen in Empuraan. “Not just that the number of characters is increasing, but you will also witness even more settings and landscapes where the story unfolds. But amongst all this, we strongly believe that the film maintains a coherent narrative.”

The second instalment in a planned franchise, Empuraan stars Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Kishore, Saniya Iyappan, Saikumar, Baiju Santhosh, Fazil and Sachin Khedekar in key roles. The film features music by Deepak Dev, cinematography by Sujith Vaassudev and editing by Akhilesh Mohan. Empuraan is set to release worldwide on March 27.
