Despite competition from AR Murugadoss’ action drama Sikandar, starring Salman Khan, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Malayalam epic L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal, continued to forge ahead at the domestic box office. The sequel to Prithviraj’s 2019 directorial debut Lucifer is touted as Malayalam cinema’s biggest spectacle yet. Empuraan earned Rs 14 crore on Sunday, its fourth day at the box office.

This was a minor increment from its Saturday earnings of Rs 13.25 crore, which was a further spike from its Friday collection of Rs 11.1 crore. However, its opening day (Thursday) remains the highest grossing day yet, earning Rs 21 crore across all five languages, as reported by Sacnilk.

On Sunday, Empuraan earned the majority, Rs 13 crore, on its home turf of Malayalam, followed by Rs 45 lakh in Tamil, Rs 31 lakh in Telugu, Rs 20 lakh in Hindi, and Rs 4 lakh in Kannada. The total domestic box office collection of Empuraan after four days stands at Rs 59.35 crore, a few lakhs shy of hitting Rs 60 crore.

Empuraan has been raking in numbers despite the controversy regarding certain references to the 2002 Gujarat riots. The film’s production team has confirmed scenes depicting violence against women and riots would be removed and the name of the antagonist will be changed. Many state BJP leaders have spoken against the film. Mohanlal on Sunday even expressed regret over the raging row surrounding his film and assured that the controversial portions would be removed from the movie.

The National Award-winning actor posted a regret note on his Facebook account hours after Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Opposition Leader V D Satheesan extended their support to the Prithviraj-directed movie.

Mohanlal’s social media post, expressing the entire movie team’s “sincere regret,” was later shared by Prithviraj and one of the producers, Antony Perumbavoor. Mohanlal said in his Facebook post, “As an artist, it is my duty to ensure that none of my films promote hatred toward any political movement, ideology, or religious community. With that in mind, both me and the Empuraan team sincerely regret any distress that may have caused to those who love me. We also acknowledge that the responsibility for this rests with all of us who worked on the film. With this realisation, we have collectively decided to remove such elements from the movie.”

L2: Empuraan also stars Manju Warrier, Abhimanyu Sharma, Indrajith Sukumaran, Sukant Goel, and Nikhat Khan among others. Written by Murali Gopy and produced by Aashirwad Cinemas, it marks Prithviraj’s third directorial collaboration with Mohanlal, after Lucifer and Bro Daddy. In an interview with SCREEN, Prithviraj said, “This is not all just glitz and snazzy shots. I jokingly always tell my producer that we’ll put out the film in theatres and make the audience guess the budget. And I’ll tell you, the guess will always be more than the actual budget.” Empuraan is the first Malayalam film to release on IMAX screens.
