Blessy on intimate scene between a goat and Prithviraj in Aadujeevitham: ‘My Najeeb is not like that’

Rumours were making the rounds that an intimate scene between Prithviraj and a goat was shot (based on the book) but was removed by the censor board.

Prithviraj’s Aadujeevitham, directed by Blessy, is getting a good response in Kerala and a few other parts of the country. The survival drama about a young Malayali trying to free himself from slavery in Saudi Arabia has struck a chord with the audience. And as the makers are finally reaping the benefit of decade-long hard work and struggle, a rumour about the film has bothered the film’s director Blessy. It is said that an intimate scene between a goat and Prithviraj was filmed, but the CBFC had removed it.

In an interview with Manorama News, Blessy was probed about the rumour. While the book Aadujeevitham, written by Benyamin, the source material of the film, features such an intimate scene between the story’s protagonist Najeeb and a goat, director Blessy denied shooting such a scene for the film adaptation. He was quoted as saying, “This is an unnecessary controversy. I’m not sure if someone is deliberately creating these rumours. I hope the audience will distance themselves from such rumours.”

However, during the scripting stage, the scene was discussed but Blessy chose to avoid it as he wanted to make a different version of Najeeb for his film. He said, “During the scripting stage, discussions about this scene arose. The way Benyamin wrote the scene is quite subtle. But, for me to film such a scene is not easy. However, that wasn’t my main concern. I could have shot the scene in various ways, but I was thinking about Najeeb. Wouldn’t he feel guilt afterward? Perhaps the Najeeb in the book is without guilt, but my Najeeb is not like that.”

Blessy claimed that if he had to shoot all the material from the book it would take him a series to cover every detail. Instead, he only adapted 43 pages from the novel. “The aim is to capture the essence of the novel,” Blessy said. The director has also introduced many new scenes in the film that aren’t part of the original text. He has always maintained that Aadujeevitham film is his interpretation of the classic Malayalam novel.

The film, with music from AR Rahman, was released in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam, and has raked in Rs 40 crore in the country in six days. The overseas collection is said to be around Rs 36 crore. It is expected to continue its good box office run in the forthcoming weekend.
