Bha Bha Ba box office collection Day 1: Amid boycott calls and public outrage over Dileep’s acquittal in a sexual assault case involving a Malayalam actress, his new film, an action-comedy titled Bha Bha Ba, an acronym for Bhayam, Bhakthi, Bahumanam, has released. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film has had a decent opening at the box office. Early estimates suggest the film earned Rs 6.75 crore in net collections on its opening day, screening across approximately 1,000 shows.

The film recorded an overall robust 66.81% Malayalam occupancy on its first day. Morning shows began on a strong note with 63.16% occupancy, dipped to 57.74% in the afternoon shows, but regained momentum with 67.17% in the evening, and closed the day with 79.16% occupancy in night shows. Kochi, which hosted the most screens at 231, recorded a remarkable 82% occupancy, while Trivandrum, with the second-highest number of shows, registered 59.25% occupancy.

In comparison with Dileep’s last releases, Bha Bha Ba has fared significantly better. His previous film, Prince and Family, had collected only Rs 90 lakhs on its opening day, while Pavi Caretaker earned Rs 1.05 crore, and the crime thriller Thankamani managed just Rs 40 lakhs. Post-pandemic, this marks Dileep’s biggest opening, as his other recent releases, Voice of Sathyanathan (Rs 1.65 crore) and Bandra (Rs 1.15 crore), had opened to comparatively disappointing numbers.

Bha Bha Ba has also outperformed several other major Malayalam releases of the year, including the blockbuster horror Dies Irae (Rs 4.7 crore), Mohanlal’s Thudarum (Rs 5.25 crore), Mammootty’s Kalamkaval (Rs 5 crore), and Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra (Rs 2.7 crore). With a solid opening, mixed word of mouth, and a cameo by Mohanlal, it remains to be seen how the film performs over the coming weekend.

To those unaware, earlier in December, a Sessions Court in Ernakulam acquitted actor Dileep in the 2017 case concerning the abduction and sexual assault of another actor in the Malayalam film industry. While six accused were found guilty of rape and related offences, Dileep, alleged to have orchestrated the crime, was acquitted after a long trial marked by multiple twists. The case became a watershed moment for the Malayalam film industry, sparking widespread discussions on sexual harassment, discrimination, and gaps in grievance redressal mechanisms. It also led to the formation of the Hema Committee, whose report was released last year.
