Girls’ Generation’s YoonA and rising actor Lee Chae Min’s chemistry has set a tvN record for 2025. Netflix’s K-Drama Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is topping the non-English charts, aiming for another queen of tears moment. The show’s story and the lead actors’ chemistry have drawn attention, but it also sparked debate online because YoonA is 11 years older than Lee Chae Min. The age-gap, while unsettling to some, seems to have worked in favour of the show’s promotion.

YoonA and Lee Chae Min’s chemistry overshadow controversy

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is based on real history, inspired by the Korean web novel Surviving as Yeonsangun’s Chef by Park Guk Jae. While the actual history is controversial, given the ruthless reign of Yeonsangun, the K-drama uses it as a backdrop. Chang Tae Yoo’s directorial is not a retelling about the Joseon-era’s ruler, it blends historical fantasy with romance elements while staying away from real controversy. Still, some viewers objected to the age gap between the lead stars, especially during the kiss in the fourth episode, which comes much earlier than typical K-dramas, stretching such scenes to eight or nine episodes. The scene shows Lee Chae Min staring deeply into YoonA’s eyes before leaning in for a kiss. YoonA looks surprised at first, but the moment intensifies, and the two appear completely lost. The scene even hints at closeness beyond the kiss before the camera pans away. Viewers were left shocked and debating over such a bold moment, especially in a historical setting.

Some viewers slammed critics for focusing on the age gap, pointing out a double standard where older male leads with younger female actors are often accepted, but the reverse draws backlash. The difference is 11 years, which made some lose interest, while others found it unusual but still enjoyed the story. Clips of the show are now going viral on TikTok and reels, making it another ‘grand tvN’ moment in making. Originally, Park Sung Hoon, known for The Glory, was set to play Lee Chae Min’s role, but he stepped away at the last moment, leaving Chae Min to step in, a move that unexpectedly worked, given his rising popularity.

Despite mixed reactions to the lead actors, the K-drama is clearly dominating viewership both at home and abroad. On August 31, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty became the most-watched tvN drama of 2025, scoring 11.1 percent nationwide and claiming the top spot in its time slot across all channels. Among viewers aged 20 to 49, it earned an average of 4.5 percent nationwide rating. On Netflix, the show has spent two weeks in the non-English Top 10, racking up 8.1 million views this week and ranking number one in 29 countries.
