The Conjuring: Last Rites Movie Audience Review: As a movie franchise grows, it brings along with it certain levels of expectation that have been set by the previous films. Fans become connected to the characters and the narrative itself, and that is certainly the case with The Conjuring movie franchise. It became 11 films strong with the release of the final instalment, Last Rites, but fans on the internet aren’t exactly satisfied with the film, and they have spoken their mind without any filter.

The film was released on September 5, and according to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film sold around 350k tickets before its release, which is the most by any horror title in India. The tracker also predicted that the film is likely to earn upwards of Rs 15 crore on its first day (India net), and at the time of publishing, Last Rites had earned Rs 4.2 crore. While some fans are defending the Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga starrer, there are many who feel that the film is not the best way to end the “once great franchise”.

One X user wrote, “The Conjuring: Last Rites is a complete letdown. nothing new or interesting for horror and thriller fans. It’s a waste of time and a massive disappointment. It is the worst movie of the franchise.” In another review posted on X, the user wrote, “The scariest demon in Last Rites wasn’t on screen; it was the writing. This film deserved an exorcism more than its characters did. A weak finale to a once great franchise, it wastes every ounce of potential it had.” Film critic Beatrice Loayza of the New York Times said, “As it stands, the film is a disappointing send-off; more an eccentric family drama than a real chiller.”

On the other hand, many had slightly better and almost positive reviews for the film, as one user on X wrote, “Personally didn’t quite have the same spine-chilling aura as The Conjuring 2, Annabelle, or Nun 1 and 2. The first half was a very slow burner, but the second half truly found its rhythm, delivering some gripping moments. Another film critic, Tim Robey of the Daily Mail, said, “Sticking to a template fans know with a shivery intimacy by now, it brings the series to rest with enough chillingly imaginative touches to make it a winner.”

Directed by Michael Chaves, the cast of the film includes Patrick, Vera, Elliot Cowan, Ben Hardy, Beau Gadsdon, John Brotherton, and Mia Tomlinson.
