Leave The World Behind trailer: Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali promise a gritty apocalypse thriller

The trailer of Leave The World Behind is reminiscent of M Night Shamylan’s Knock At The Cabin. Like Shamylan’s film, here too, a family (Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke) trying to enjoy a vacation in the woods is disturbed by the arrival of two strangers (Mahershala Ali and Myha’la). The strangers bring bad news about a worldwide cyber attack, but the catastrophe doesn’t stay with the online world, even the tangible world faces the apocalypse. Mahershala’s character says, “There is no going back to normal.”

There are some brilliant shots like the one where Ethan Hawke drives away from the rain of blood and Mahershala uses the door as a shield to save him from the oncoming flood. Knock At The Cabin too had a similar storyline, but Leave The World Behind seems to be big in terms of stakes and scale.

Based on the novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam, it has been adapted to screen by Sam Esmail himself. Farrah Mackenzie, Charlie Evans, and Kevin Bacon are the other actors in the film. The movie marks the second collaboration between Julia Roberts and Esmail, who worked together on the first season of the Amazon Prime Video series Homecoming.

A Netflix Original, Leave The World Behind was initially supposed to star Denzel Washington. However, upon his exit from the project, he was replaced by Mahershala Ali.
