‘Tanu weds Manu’ maker says partner, distributors cheated him

Vinod Bachchan, producer of the Hindi film 'Tanu weds Manu',filed a private complaint against co-producer Shailesh Singh and four distributors.

Vinod Bachchan, producer of the Hindi film ‘Tanu weds Manu’,on Tuesday filed a private complaint against co-producer Shailesh Singh and four distributors alleging that they had cheated him to the tune of Rs 36 crore and demanded that an FIR be registered.

The complaint was filed in the court of Andheri Magistrate who has kept the matter for hearing on December 20.

Bachchan alleged he was approached by Shailesh in 2009 to jointly produce the film and accordingly they entered into agreement to own rights in the ratio of 51 to 49 per cent respectively.

The film, starring Kangna Ranaut and R Madhavan, was released in February this year.

It was also decided among the two producers that the negative rights, intellectual property including copyrights, sequel and remake, will be shared in the same 51:49 ratio,Bachchan submitted.

After the completion of the film, the producers were approached by co-accused Sunil Bohra of M/s Bohra Bros for distribution of ‘Tanu weds Manu’ and both sides entered into an agreement for distributing the film for a 10-year period.

Bachchan alleged that Bohra approached co-accused Vikram Malhotra of M/s Via Com 18 media pvt ltd for sub distribution of the film and entered into an agreement with him. However,Bachchan said that a copy of the agreement which was given to him later revealed that Via Com was sold distribution rights of the film perpetually and not just 10 years.

Although Bohra held 10 years distribution rights of the film, how could he give the rights to some one else perpetually,Bachchan asked. Besides,Bohra had executed the agreement in capacity as producer whereas in fact he was a distributor and not producer, the complainant alleged.

To make the matters worse,co-producer of the film Shailesh had also sold the film to M/s Ankita films,he alleged.
