John has action hero ambitions from ‘Force’
Driven by belief that tomorrow is another day,Abraham shares his optimism about his next film, action thriller 'Force'.
Looks like John Abraham has gotten over his last two disastrous outings ‘Jhootha Hi Sahi’ and ‘Aashayein’. Driven by the belief that tomorrow is another day,the actor is optimistic about his next film,’Force’
John Abraham arrives at Mumbais Mehboob Studios on his dirt bike and wastes no time in getting into interview mode. He talks about his wayward career path, his wish to establish himself as an action hero and how his single status is allowing him to spend time with his parents.
With fast-paced action entertainers doing well, are you confident about Force?
Every film brings a different dimension to any actor and I am known for being in that weird space where I do movies like ‘Kabul Express’,’Water’,’No Smoking’ and so on. ‘Force’ is a huge experiment for me as an action hero. After ‘Dhoom’,I havent done any action film. So this one needs to click to establish me as action hero. The only other true blue action hero we have is Akshay Kumar. There is no one from the younger lot who can be termed as an action hero and I am keen to establish myself in that space.
Post ‘Dhoom’,why didnt you take up more action films?
After ‘Dhoom’,a lot of people told me that I should do more action films, but I guess a good script never came my way. One day,Vipul Shah called me up and asked me to watch the Tamil film ‘Khakha Khakha’ because he wanted to remake the film with me. I was blown over by it.
Your muscles and biceps in ‘Force’ have been making headlines for a while now. But you have always had a fit body,so why the buzz around it this time?
In Force, director Nishikant Kamat wanted the action to be more nuanced and enhanced as compared to the original. He wanted me to look real and intense. I have always worked out,but this time,I worked a lot harder to look tougher.
Did the failure of ‘Jhootha Hi Sahi’ and ‘Aashayein’ bog you down?
Not really. One can look at a film in retrospect and find many reasons for the film not faring well. But there is a lot of pressure on me when one film fails because I mostly have just one release every year.
In retrospect,do you feel you could have planned your career differently?
I am clueless about the business of filmmaking. So I end up experimenting with all kinds of films. But I guess there is a time for everything and now is the time for me to do more commercial films.
You seem to have become good friends with Akshay Kumar lately.
We became friends when we were shooting for ‘Garam Masala’. He is a great guy to work with. We had so much fun during the shooting of ‘Desi Boyz’ in Bangkok. I will start shooting with him again in October for ‘Houseful 2’. He is a very simple man and it is easy to get along with him.
Much has been written about your link-ups,after your break up with Bipasha Basu. So who is ruling your life off-screen?
Right now, nobody. I am just enjoying my space and the single status. I am spending a lot of time with my parents. The last eight years of my life,I have not given them much time as I was busy working. Now,I am trying to make up for it.
