Bollywood shocked as Sanjay Dutt gets 5 year jail in 1993 Mumbai Blasts

Dutt,who has already served 18 months of his sentence,will now have to serve three and a half years in jail.

Bollywood actors were upset and shocked after actor Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to five years of jail in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

Sanjay Dutt,who has already served 18 months of his sentence,will now have to spend three and a half years in jail.

The court has given him four weeks to surrender.

Director Mahesh Bhatt took to twitter to express his anguish: “Heart Broken: Just heard that Sanjay Dutt has to go to jail for 5 years. I expected mercy! Alas it did not happen.”

Producer-director Karan Johar tweeted: I am truly shattered to hear of Sanju’s sentence…the nicest guy i have known just doesnt deserve this…my heart goes out to him….

Music director Vishal Dadlani wrote: “I am not contesting/denying the law,but it breaks my heart that @duttsanjay ‘s to face this.He has done so much,so selflessly for so many!”

Jewellery designer Farah Ali Khan tweeted: “Sanjay Dutt is a very good Man who doesn’t deserve this sentence. God give him the strength. Prayers and more with his family.”

Actress Sherlyn Chopra also wrote: Sad news!!!!! “@GaganDeepMishra: #SanjayDutt Breaking : Sanjay Dutt gets imprisonment for 5 years in 1993 Mumbai blasts case,#1993Mumbai”

Actor and director Kamaal R Khan: Sanjay Dutt got 5 yrs jail means he has to be in jail for almost 3 Yrs more. It’s really bad news 4 Dutt family. My sympathy with the family.

The actor was convicted in November 2006 for illegal possession of a 9mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle but was acquitted of more serious charges of criminal conspiracy under the now defunct anti-terror TADA.

After a marathon 10-month-long hearing beginning November 1,2011,the Supreme Court had in August 2012 reserved its verdict on appeals and cross-appeals in the 1993 Mumbai serial terror bombing case in which 257 people were killed and 713 were injured.

During the hearing,the bench had for the first time used laptops in the court to peruse the voluminous documents and record of the case and the submissions of various counsel.

On March 12,1993,Mumbai was rocked by a series of blasts,engineered by fundamentalist elements,which also damaged property worth over Rs 27 crore. (With PTI inputs)
