As torrential rain in Himachal Pradesh continues to wreak havoc across several districts, numerous videos capturing the destruction of property have emerged online. One particular clip, which has gone viral, showed extensive damage to a popular restaurant in Manali caused by a flood.

Shared by an X handle @GoHimachal_, the video shows the front gate of the iconic Sher-e-Punjab restaurant remaining with the building swept away by the flood. “Tragic situation in Manali, Himachal Pradesh. In Manali, the iconic Sher-e-Punjab restaurant was heavily damaged by the strong floodwaters. Most of the building was washed away, leaving only the front gate wall standing,” the caption read.

The video quickly gained traction, prompting several viewers to express their concerns amid the ongoing rain. “The government should immediately ban any construction near the river. These unchecked constructions cannot survive the wrath of nature,” one user commented. “During our Manali trip this June, my family and I visited this favorite restaurant of ours several times for lunch and dinner. In our 7-day trip, we dined there 2–3 times. Seeing its condition today, I sincerely pray that everything gets better soon,” another user commented.

In contrast, a third user remarked, “This is not at all tragic, this hotel was so close to the river, expected! It’s in fact foolish that a hotel operated at such proximity to the river! All the way along the old Manali bridge you can see such hotels commonly, just beside river!”

In Himachal Pradesh, continuous rainfall since Sunday night triggered landslides and swollen rivers, disrupting connectivity. Schools and colleges were closed in nine districts, including Shimla, Mandi, Solan, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti.

D C Rana, Special Secretary, Himachal Pradesh Disaster Management Authority, has stated, “Water level in Pong Dam is rising due to heavy inflow from catchment areas; surplus water may be released within the next two days. Public advisories have been issued urging people to stay away from rivers, seasonal rivulets, and nullahs”.
