Actor and former cricketer Yograj Singh, who has done over 200 films across various languages, said that he has never asked for a formal payment for his acting roles. Instead, he said, he accepts whatever amount producers offer him. In an interview, Yograj said that he has done films for as low as Rs 50,000, and that sometimes he’s given Rs 2 lakh or even Rs 9 lakh. He works primarily in the Punjabi film industry, but has also appeared in Hindi and Tamil films such as Singh is Bliing and Indian 2.

In an interview on the Fivewood Podcast, he opened up about his acting career, which began in the 1970s. He said that his father was dead against it, and that their relationship had already soured because he’d decided to cut his hair. He was forbidden from even mentioning films in their house. In the same interview, he said that he has never caused monetary loss on a film set by throwing tantrums. He did, however, admit that he once got into an altercation with a producer who threw him out of his trailer when he had injured himself.

He said, “I’ve done so many films and songs, but I’ve never asked for a formal payment. I tell them, ‘I will accept whatever you give me in a sealed envelope’. I’ve never demanded money. I never even had a fixed rate. Sometimes I worked for Rs 2 lakh, or Rs 2.5 lakh. Sometimes I worked for Rs 50,000.” When the interviewer expressed disbelief about Yograj never having asked for remuneration for his work, he said, “Never.”

Yograj also claimed that he has never turned down an offer, which is why he has done around 250 films in his career. “I’ve never said no in my entire life; no producer has left my house with a rejection. I’ve never thrown tantrums, nor have I caused any loss. Not a single producer can say to my face that they have suffered a loss because of me. Perhaps some artistes have made claims because they are jealous, but whoever I’ve worked with has liked me.”

He said that when he started out, he didn’t distinguish between popular stars and newcomers; he worked with everybody. “I’ve never caused losses, but yes, I have always maintained my self-respect. Once, I was doing a film with an injured leg, and they took my chair out of the vanity van and kept it outside. I told that man, ‘Today you’ve removed my chair from the van, if you do this again, I will take the same chair and bash your head in with it’.”
