‘Won’t forgive Kangana Ranaut’: Who is Mahinder Kaur, 78, championed by Diljit Dosanjh, who has been fighting Kangana in court for 5 years
Kangana Ranaut had to apologize to Mahinder Kaur, the old Punjabi woman she accused of leading the farmers protest for Rs 100 in 2020, which also ignited her infamous X spat with Diljit Dosanjh.
Kangana Ranaut apologizes to Mahinder Kaur.Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut has apologized to Mahinder Kaur, the 78-year-old woman from Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Punjab, at a Bathinda court. The defamation case stems from Kangana’s tweet in 2020, when she insinuated that the woman spotted headlining the farmer protests in the country was the same “dadi” who led the Shaheen Bagh protest in New Delhi. She hinted that the woman sat during these protests in exchange of Rs 100.
Kangana Ranaut apologises
Kangana appeared before the Bathinda court this week and not only apologized to Kaur, but also paid Rs 50,000 as bail. The next hearing is scheduled for November 24. However, Kaur has claimed that she’ll “never forgive” the actor for her remarks. “She has never met me. I will not forgive her,” said Kaur.
In the interview with The Tribune, Kaur slammed Kangana for dragging her to the court at this age. “She is a big actress and political leader, while I am a small farmer. Yet she has made me come to the court at this age. She should realise how much her visit costs the state exchequer and the trouble caused to the public because of it. She says her remark was misinterpreted, but it’s not true,” said Kaur.
She told Indian Express, “A farmer’s life is never easy. My son, the youngest, is unwell, my daughter-in-law has died, leaving behind no child. The house runs on my shoulders now. But I will not step back from this fight.”
While Kaur couldn’t make it to the court on grounds of poor health, her husband Labh Singh, 80, attended the proceedings on her behalf. Meanwhile, the court had last September directed Kangana, the BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, to be present in person and rejected her plea to appear via video conference.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, she asserted that she had made no comments against any individual. “Whatever misunderstanding happened with the family of Mahinder ji, I gave a message to ‘mata ji’ to her husband about how she was the victim of a misunderstanding. Never in my dreams could I imagine this Every ‘mata‘, be she from Punjab or Himachal, is respectable to me,” she said.
“There was a retweet which was used as a meme. I have also spoken and discussed this with the husband of Mahinder ji,” she said. There were many women in that meme, and no comments were made against any individual, she asserted. Kangana, however, said she regretted the misunderstanding that arose from the post.
How Diljit Dosanjh waded into the controversy
A Twitter spat ensued in 2020 after Kangana’s controversial tweet. Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, who had been supporting the farmers protests, called out Kangana for spreading misinformation about Kaur. She hit back at him, calling him “Karan Johar ka paltu” (Karan Johar’s pet). Dosanjh has starred in Raj Mehta’s 2019 hit romantic comedy Good Newwz, backed by filmmaker Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.
He had also shared a photo of Kaur and tagged Kangana. “Respected MAHINDER KAUR JI Ah Sunn La Ni With Proof @KanganaTeam Banda Ena V Ni Anna Hona Chaida.. Kush v Boli Turi jandi aa ..(Listen to this proof, @KanganaTeam. One should not be this blind. She keeps says anything),” he wrote in his tweet.
In another tweet, he wrote, “Our mothers are god for us. You have stirred up a hornet’s nest. Google the Punjabi. Every word you say is like that, what do you want? They are like God for us. Did nobody teach you any etiquette of speaking? Punjabis will teach you how to speak to those who are elder to you.”
Earlier this year, Kangana relaunched her offensive against Dosanjh, blaming him for working with Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in his rom-com Sardaar Ji 3 following the Pahalgam terror tragedy.
