When Shah Rukh Khan explained why and from where he got ‘arrogant’ tag: ‘If you call self-respect arrogance…’
Shah Rukh Khan once opened up about being labelled arrogant for requesting a script and dialogues before signing a project.

Before becoming Bollywood’s Baadshah and earning much love and admiration for his candid nature, Shah Rukh Khan was once labelled as arrogant during the early years of his career. The actor’s insistence on receiving a script and dialogues before signing a project irritated many directors of the ’90s, who were accustomed to casting actors based solely on a storyline. In an old interview, Shah Rukh explained his work process and addressed the label of arrogance.
In an interview with Lehren Retro, Shah Rukh once said, “Agar insaan mein self-respect ko arrogance bolte hai, toh main hoon 100 per cent arrogant (If you call self-respect in a human being arrogance, then I am 100 per cent arrogant).”
The Jawan actor attributed this perception to film magazines and certain directors of the time. “If I say the same thing to a film magazine, they would cut the first part and only write, ‘Yes, I am arrogant.’ Maybe that’s why the perception exists. Secondly, when I sign a film, I trouble them a lot. You can call it trouble or you can call it detailing. People come to me with a storyline and ask me to do films, but I ask them for a proper script and dialogues. I am a man of the stage; I’ve worked in theatre. Give me a character, and I’m sure I can play it,” he explained.
He further elaborated, “Now that I’m a hit actor, people say I’ve reached this position because of my attention to detail. But earlier, when I wasn’t famous and I followed the same practice of asking for scripts, they used to say, ‘What does he think of himself?’ So, it depends on where you are in life.”
On the professional front, Shah Rukh Khan is set to star alongside his daughter Suhana Khan in Sujoy Ghosh’s The King. The project is expected to go on floors in January 2025.
