Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui said that he observed the work of Laurence Olivier and Peter O’Toole during his days at the National School of Drama, and that he admires the acting abilities of Anthony Hopkins and Denzel Washington, but revealed that he absolutely loves Kamal Haasan as a performer. In an interview, Nawaz recalled his interactions with the legendary Tamil actor, and said that he once worked as his dialogue coach.

Recalling the story, he told Filmfare in an interview, “I love Kamal Haasan. I was once his dialogue coach, for a film called Abhay.” Asked how he found himself in this position, he said, “A senior of mine from NSD asked me if I’d like to accompany him to the South and help Kamal ji out. I was jobless at the time, I was struggling, so I agreed. I would have the script with me, and I would correct him if he made any errors.”

He said that he also took the opportunity to display his own skill in front of the star. “I got a lot of opportunities to interact with him during that time. He would come to an apartment at Yari Road, and I once performed a monologue from the play Tughlaq for him. It was the king’s monologue, and he gave me a task. He said that I must deliver the same speech, but in 10 different ways.” Asked if he managed to complete the task, Nawaz said, “No! How could I do it in 10 different ways. I was lost. I could do it in three, maybe four… But he could do it. He has such a strong control over his physical self, as a trained dancer, he could do it in 10 different ways.”

Nawaz said that he did a scene in Kamal Haasan’s epic historical film Hey Ram, but it was cut. Directed by Suresh Krissna, Abhay was released as Aalavandhan in Tamil. Kamal Haasan recently starred in Indian 2, which under-performed at the box office upon release.
