Imran Khan, despite his absence from films, has managed to be in the news owing to his honest, candid and filter-free interviews. The actor, who was last seen in Katti Batti, was a constant target of the media when he was still acting in the movies, often pitted against actors like Ranbir Kapoor. In a recent interview, Imran revealed that about a decade ago, he was far more guarded because the media had a “narrow and “reductive” worldview and only wanted to change his statements to make things “spicy”.
Recalling an incident where he was promoting his film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, with Anushka Sharma, who was the lead of the movie, the Jaane Tu.. Ya Jaane Na actor said that instead of reporters asking relevant questions, he was asked about his co-star’s clothes in Vishal Bhardwaj’s directorial. “We perceived the Matru…as an issue-based film. I was thrown into a room full of people from the press and suddenly, someone asked me, ‘Is film mein Anushka ji ne two-piece bikini pehni hai. Iske baare mein aap kya kahenge? (What do you think of Anushka wearing a two-piece bikini?)’ It was horribly uncomfortable. I thought, ‘Main Kya Kahoon? (What do I say now?),'” the Delhi Belly actor told India Today.
Imran Khan also spoke about how back in the day, the press would bring up his uncle Aamir Khan’s name during interviews for the sake of headlines. “They would ask stuff like, ‘Aap ke mamu ne yeh film dekhi hai, unka kya kehna hai? (Did your uncle see the film? What does he think of it?)’ They wanted to somehow get the mention of another famous person,” said the 41-year-old.
The actor opened up about how the press didn’t get his wry sense of humour which equated to them misunderstanding him. Imran shared, “The media landscape has evolved today and I think people are now approaching it with a far greater sensitivity and a measure of self-regulation. At that time, everyone was in a race. My wry deadpan humour would not land and they would take things I said seriously. They would be like ‘Oh this guy is saying this seriously’ and they would report it like that. They wouldn’t get my sarcasm or irony.”
