Shatrughan Sinha and Amitabh Bachchan were superstars in the 1970s, having worked together on films such as Parwana, Dostana, Shaan, Naseeb, and Yaar Meri Zindagi, among others. However, there was a huge difference between the two when it came to work ethics. While Amitabh Bachchan was famous for his punctuality, Shatrughan Sinha was known for being fashionably late.
His tardiness became a topic of conversation at his book launch event some years ago, when Amitabh Bachchan brought it up. Addressing the media, Amitabh Bachchan said, “Some habits are forever, we should let them be. Shatrughan Sinha has always been like this. He had an apartment near the Taj hotel, we often used to hang out there. At that point, I didn’t have much work, but he was a star, and he had this habit of being fashionably late wherever he went.”
Big B recalled, “Often, we would tell him, let’s go for a movie outing. He would never say no to any plan, but would always be late. Suppose the show is at 6 pm, he wouldn’t have left his house even at 6:30 pm.” He added, “Even if he had a flight to catch, he would be late. Everybody at the airport would run behind him, ‘Sir, your flight is about to take off’, and he would be like, ‘Yeah, yeah, I am coming’. He hasn’t changed a bit.”
Amitabh Bachchan continued, “Another shocking thing I’d like to share… Back in those days, we were working together on two films, Shaan and Naseeb. We used to do three different shifts on the same day, but for different movies. We used to shoot for Shaan from 7 in the morning to 2 in the noon. At 2, we both used to leave the set in our respective cars to reach the set of Naseeb. I would reach the set by 2:30 pm, but Shatru used to reach after 5-7 hours. Yeh bhai sahab kaha gayab hojate the, aaj tak humein nahi pata (Till date, we don’t have a clue where he used to disappear).”
Replying to this, Shatrughan Sinha said with a laugh, “Now, it’s too late for me to answer this. Everything has changed.”
In the same conversation, Amitabh Bachchan also recalled how Shatrughan Sinha always managed to draw people’s attention towards himself. He said, “We worked in a film called Bombay to Goa. There was a scene between Aruna Irani and me by the side of a swimming pool. I had already completed my shot with Shatru, who walked away after his scene. Then, when Aruna ji and I were doing our scene, we noticed a ring made of smoke floating between our faces. It was him smoking in the back, and exhaling the smoke ring right into our face so the attention is on him and not on us.”
Despite their friendship, the two stars reportedly were not on good terms after their film Kaala Patthar. In an interview with Zoom, Shatrughan Sinha said, “We have been friends since our struggle days. But in those days, ab romanch ka chakkar raha ho ya romance ka chakkar raha ho, something happened at that time… I told them this was not in the script but Amitabh’s team approved of the scene. I told them, ‘This was not discussed before. What if Shashi Kapoor takes longer to come to stop the fight, my character will be killed, then what is the point of him returning after the interval?’ Call it principles, or arrogance, but the character which couldn’t be defeated, was defeated.”
