Varun Dhawan says niece Anjini didn’t bag Binny and Family because of nepotism, shares why his father David Dhawan didn’t launch him: ‘We don’t have that tradition’
Binny and Family stars Anjini Dhawan as a rebellious teenager in London, who has a generational gap clash with her conservative grandfather (Pankaj Kapur), who visits her in the UK.

Varun Dhawan says it is difficult to accept that a girl from a film family bagged her debut movie on her own, but that is indeed what happened, the actor insists, with his niece Anjini Dhawan as she gears up for her launch with Binny and Family. Varun was present at the trailer launch of the comedy film, which also stars Pankaj Kapoor, Himani Shivpuri, Rajesh Kumar and Charu Shankar.
During the event, Varun recalled how the trailer of his debut film Student of the Year was launched at the same PVR auditorium. “My appeal to people is that if they can try and give her the same love as you gave the three of us,” he said, referring to his co-stars Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt from the Karan Johar campus drama.
Binny and Family is presented by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms and produced by Mahaveer Jain, who, Varun Dhawan said, he didn’t even know in a professional capacity and hence there was no reason for the maker to sign Anjini Dhawan. “No matter how much I say that she did this on her own, she has bagged the film on her own, it is difficult to believe when you are related to a film family. I am not related to Mahaveer ji; professionally we haven’t worked together. He didn’t cast her because of me or daddy. I came to know about the film through two friends, Shashank Khaitaan and Varun Gupta.

“They had told me that it is a good film and I was slightly offended, because I wasn’t asked if I could see the film! When I saw the film, I was moved. My father never launched me. We don’t have that tradition and he doesn’t believe in it. So, we have no hand in what she has done, so it will be wrong for me to take any credit for her success. She has genuinely done this by herself,” the actor said.
The film stars Anjini Dhawan as a rebellious teenager in London, who has a generational gap clash with her conservative grandfather (Pankaj Kapur), from a small town in Bihar, who visits her in the UK. At the launch, Varun Dhawan was asked if he ever went through this phase and how his thought process has changed since becoming a father. Varun and his wife Natasha Dalal welcomed their first child, a baby girl, in June this year.
“Becoming a father has changed my thinking. It feels weird that mom and dad has just scolded me, then you go to the baby’s room and she is also scolding you! Uss waqt aap sochte ho aapka position kya hai ghar pe! But this is called adulting. I am fortunate that I have an elder brother who also takes some load. What becomes extremely scary for a child at that age is the parents’ health. When we are young, they worry for us but later we have to navigate that situation. I derive my strength from my mother, as I am sure she does from her,” Varun added.
Directed by Ssanjay Tripaathy, Binny and Family is set to release in cinemas on September 20. Varun Dhawan, meanwhile, was recently seen in a special appearance in the blockbuster horror comedy Stree 2 and will be next seen in the actioner Baby John, hitting the big screen this Christmas.
