Varun Dhawan says David Dhawan was ready to leave him in London after he called Kuch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ‘cooler’ than Bade Miyan Chote Miyan
Varun Dhawan is currently awaiting the release of his spy espionage series Citadel, co-starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu.

The biggest box office clash is when you have to choose between a film your father made, and the one you find better. Actor Varun Dhawan has recalled the time when his filmmaker father David Dhawan’s comedy Bade Miyan Chote Miyan had a box office face-off with Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Released in 1998, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji while Dhawan’s comedy was headlined by Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda.
In an interview with Indianexpress.com, Varun Dhawan recalled how he thought the musical romantic drama was a “cooler” film and was impatient to watch it, much to the annoyance of his father.
Full interview of Varun Dhawan and Samantha for Citadel:
“The Bade Miyan Chote Miyan premiere was in London–I don’t know why they did it there–and the producers had got us a limousine with faces of Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan pasted on it. We were going through the streets of London in that limousine, with both of them making funny faces in the poster. But I was dying to watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and I didn’t even know Karan at that point of time!
“Kuch Kuch Hota Hai just felt like a cooler film, but my dad was like, ‘Stop it, I will leave you on the streets here.’ I remember telling him you can’t treat children here like this and my dad was like, ‘He is so badly behaved, why did I get him here’. Day one of Bade Miyan was bigger because of the mass factor but obviously Kuch Kuch Hota Hai went on to become huge. And I ultimately got launched by Karan Johar!” Varun said.

The actor, who made his screen debut with Karan Johar directed Student of the Year in 2012, is currently awaiting the release of his Prime Video espionage actioner Citadel: Honey Bunny. The Ra-DK helmed series–penned by Sita R Menon–pairs him opposite Samantha Ruth Prabhu, both playing undercover agents.
After this November 7 outing, Varun Dhawan will be seen on the big screen in yet another actioner, Baby John. The film is backed by Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan helmer, Atlee.
“I wanted to do action, commercial, masala action like (Baby John) and the one in the Raj-DK zone. When I watched The Family Man, I thought everyone looked so cool, I wanted to work with them. Both these titles, Baby John and Honey Bunny are (endearing) and come at a time when I am a father of a girl child! It is just a coincidence, and I hope the universe is conspiring to make all of this more special,” he added.
