Raj Kundra has been walking around wearing a mask on his face ever since he was released from jail in 2021. The businessman, who is now an actor, was imprisoned for two months after he was booked for allegedly running a pornography racket. Now, Kundra has turned that episode of his life into a movie titled UT 69, where he is playing himself. The trailer of the same was released on Wednesday.

The film, which is ‘based on a true story’, seems to be Kundra’s recollection of his time in Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail where he is frequently asked about his movie star wife Shilpa Shetty, and has to live without a toothbrush. The film’s trailer puts Kundra at the centre of everything and stresses that this is his ‘karmic debt’.

At the press conference of the trailer launch, Raj Kundra said that the matter was still subjudice but added that he “came out like a lion” because he was not guilty. Kundra, who is a British citizen, spoke about the conditions in jail and added, “When you bring a British citizen to the jail, everything becomes funny — the way you’re given your food, watered down dal, the place to stay, it was tough. Even when I was writing it, I was wondering how did we reach here.” The businessman turned actor said that while in jail, he lived with people who were accused of murder and child rape, and was told to not speak with anyone.

Kundra was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act and arrested in July 2021 by Mumbai’s crime branch. He got bail in September 2021.

Directed by Shahnawaz Ali, UT 69 releases on November 3.
