Here, she spoke about her father Rajesh Khanna and her maternal grandmother, Betty Kapadia, who came from a Ismaili Khoja family. In a recent interaction with BBC News, Twinkle reflected on growing up with various faiths present in her life and how her family nurtured a secular environment.
She said, “My notion of India is a very secular country. I grew up in that manner. My grandmother was a Ismaili, so I grew up with that culture, going to the Jamat Khana. My father is a Hindu, so I grew up going to temples. I grew up in harmony.”
She shared an instance that reflected her family’s secular beliefs. She said, “For me, one of the beautiful things was that when my grandmother passed away, the Panditji, the Hindu priest, from my father’s house, he came and touched her feet, and he was there at the kabrastan (graveyard). And everybody let him do what he had to do. It was very beautiful, and for me, that is the India that I would like to see going ahead for my children too.” Betty Kapadia passed away on November 30, 2019 at the age of 80.
Dimple is the daughter of the late star Rajesh Khanna and actor Dimple Kapadia. For the first few years of her life, Twinkle was raised in Rajesh’s bungalow Aashirvaad. After Dimple left her husband’s home with her two daughters, Twinkle grew up with the maternal side of her family. She is now married to actor Akshay Kumar.
