Twinkle Khanna’s recent comment on infidelity, where she said ‘raat gayi baat gayi’ on her talk show Two Much, created quite a stir on social media. From netizens wondering about the PR disaster also involving her husband Akshay Kumar, and generally wondering if Bollywood marriages were not as rosy as one pictures them to be, the comment ignited a sort of controversy that the show hadn’t seen until then. Now, in a new interview, Twinkle has clarified her comment and said that it was spoken in a lighthearted tone, as they were not discussing monogamy in a serious fashion.
In a chat with The Times of India, when Twinkle was asked if she was making “light of infidelity”, she said that the comments were a “part of a lighthearted game” and “not meant as a serious debate.” Twinkle said that if they were actually discussing monogamy seriously, then she would have said that “we need to evaluate where monogamy as a construct… when we moved from a nomadic lifestyle to farming, and then you know, a man and his claim over his offspring came into being vs monogamy truly being something that helps society thrive and holds it together.” She reiterated that this discussion is a “serious debate” as opposed to her comment which was “just a joke”.
In the same interview, she was asked about the show and her relationship with Kajol and she shared that she had previously interviewed the DDLJ star and knew her, but they were not friends as such. What brought them together were the things they had in common with each other. “She is also someone who doesn’t play games, what you see is what you get,” she said and added that when they worked together, she didn’t have to worry about what was happening behind the scenes, as they could both be straightforward with each other. Twinkle said that she is at a stage in her life where she doesn’t want to stagnate, and needs things that can push her out of her comfort zone, and the show did just that for her.
The controversy around Twinkle’s comment on infidelity started when the actor asked Janhvi Kapoor and Karan Johar if “emotional infidelity was worse than physical infidelity.” While Karan, Twinkle and Kajol all had the same opinion, saying physical infidelity was not a deal breaker, Janhvi expressed her shock at their comments. Twinkle, addressing Janhvi, said, “We’re in our 50s, she’s in her 20s, and she will get into this circle soon. She hasn’t seen the things we have seen. Raat gayi baat gayi (What’s happened, has happened).”
