Actor Sonam was on her way to a career high when she left films at a young age. Having appeared in films such as Tridev, Vishwatma and Vijay, she was an actor to watch out for while still in her teens, but decided to give it all up for marriage. Recalling an incident which took place on the sets of her 1988 film Vijay, Sonam revealed that she was about to drown and a young Aditya Chopra saved his life. The actor, in a interview with Siddharth Kanan said that producer Yash Chopra had asked her to learn swimming for the shoot. However, Sonam had hydrophobia and could never learn it. On the day of shooting, she accidentally entered deep end of the pool, putting her life in danger. "I have water phobia," said Sonam as she added, "Yash ji said that I have to give these shots so will have to learn swimming. I went to learn in Juhu's Horizon hotel but the instructor threw me in water, scaring me even more. So I didn't learn swimming at all." The actor, who has been part of several other films such as Tridev, Ajooba and Vishwatma recalled how she along with Rishi Kapoor had to jump in water and give a shot. "Cut to Windsor Manor in Bengaluru (then Bangalore) and Rishi ji and I had to jump in the shallow end of the water and I had told Yash ji that I didn't learn swimming. When the shot happened, somehow we entered deep end of water and I started pulling Rishi ji. I thought its my last day. Suddenly I saw that someone jumped in water with their clothes on and shoes and everything. Finally I looked and it was Aditya Chopra. So everyone thought I was giving a shot and he was the only one who understood what I was going through," said Sonam. Sonam has worked as a lead actor in films but also ensemble cast like Tridev, where there were other female co-stars like Madhuri Dixit, Sangeeta Bijlani and Vishwatma, which also co-starred Divya Bharti. Sonam reveals that she never had any friends in the film industry and the competition between female co-stars was a real thing. "I didn't have any friend as an actress because of competition. Why would we be friends. I became friends with Divya Bharti though but by then everyone knew I was leaving. At the age of 17 I had told everyone that I am getting married and I won't sign more films and that you have one year to wrap up everything. Divya ji obviously got to know, this is a small industry. I never had friends then and I don't have them now," she said. When asked if any kind of off screen chemistry with female co-stars would have helped her deliver better scenes on screen? She quickly replied, "We are not romancing, what do we need chemistry for?"
