Over a year after the release of his The Kashmir Files, which sparked significant controversy, director Vivek Agnihotri is gearing up for the release of his next directorial endeavour, The Vaccine War.

Touted as India’s first bio-science cinematic endeavour, The Vaccine War’s trailer, which dropped on Tuesday, offers a sneak peek into the film’s world, showcasing the dedication of the scientists who played a crucial role in developing the indigenous BBV152 vaccine, commonly referred to as Covaxin. The vaccine was developed by Bharat Biotech in partnership with the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Institute of Virology.

The 180-second promo wastes no time in setting the stage for the film’s central theme. At the very beginning, we witness a senior scientist (Nana Patekar) confidently stating that they will create a vaccine. However, he urges the higher-ups to keep it a top secret in the interest of “national security”.

As the trailer unfolds, a TV journalist raises a thought-provoking question about whether India’s medical infrastructure can save its massive population of 130 crore people. The journalist (Raima Sen) firmly states, “No, India can’t do it.”

The trailer immediately presents a shot featuring a whiteboard bearing the words “Only science can win this war,” underlining the primary focus of the movie.

“Is this virus a natural mutation? Or was it made in a lab by a reverse engineering process,” wonders a few characters in the film.

As the trailer progresses, it showcases Indian scientists’ unwavering dedication to developing the vaccine, despite the fear surrounding the virus and the numerous challenges they face.

Patekar’s character delivers an inspiring message to his team: “This is a war and we are all soldiers. From today, we should see only the fish’s eye just like Arjun.”

Penned by Agnihotri himself, The Vaccine War, bankrolled by his wife and actor Pallavi Joshi, stars Anupam Kher, Nana Patekar, Raima Sen, Pallavi Joshi and Sapthami Gowda in key roles. Set to hit the screens on September 28, the movie will be released in 10 different languages.

During the unveiling of the film’s teaser last month, producer-actor Pallavi Joshi said, “The Vaccine War is a very special film that will narrate the real story of the vaccine war that our country fought together against the hazardous Covid-19 virus. As the teaser captured some essential moments from the film, we are eagerly excited to present the film to the globe and show the glory proudly of our country.”

In a interview with Hindustan Times, Agnihotri noted that the earnings from The Kashmir Files, which he and his wife Pallavi Joshi accrued, were channelled into the production of The Vaccine War. “Whatever money I earned, I put into my next film which is The Vaccine War and I am bankrupt as usual. Pallavi and I were discussing that we are broke again. So for the next film, the struggle begins again,” he said.
