Gadar 2 was made on abudget of Rs 60 crore, as per director Anil Sharma, as the cast and crew took salary cuts and the makers did not spend much money on its visual effects. In an interview with Instant Bollywood, Sharma had said, “Gadar is a brand, the actors are a brand, but the industry wasn’t doing so well at the time; that’s how things work. They couldn’t give me what I wanted, but still, they gave me Rs 60 crore. It wasn’t enough, but it was a lot, considering the situation. All of us, the entire unit, we took minimum wages to cut costs. Wages naa ke barabar liye sab logon ne (we took next to nothing). We took enough to survive and provide for our families, that’s it.”
The film clashed with OMG 2 at the box office but soon after its release, it was evident that the Sunny Deol-starrer was ahead in the game. The makers have hinted at a third part of the franchise but an official announcement on Gadar 3 is still awaited.
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha released in 2001 and clashed with Lagaan. The film was one of the biggest hits of the year in the domestic market even though Lagaan received a lot of international acclaim.
Gadar 2 proved to be the biggest hit of Sunny Deol’s career, even though the actor has been in the movies since 1983.
