Singer Sonu Nigam and music composer AR Rahman have had a long and successful work relationship. In a recent interview, when Sonu was asked about their collaboration in the film Yuvvraaj, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, the singer dismissed the songs by saying that the entire album was “bekaar (bad)”.

In a chat with O2 India, Sonu was asked about the song “Shano Shano” from Yuvvraaj and he said, “That song is pretty average. It wasn’t such a good song. Let’s not talk about it. I won’t be able to lie. I won’t be able to praise a bad song.” He was then asked about the other two songs that he recorded for the same album and he said, “Voh bhool jaiye aap. Iske saare gaane bekaar the. (Just forget about it. All the songs were bad.)”

Subhash Ghai, who directed Yuuvraaj, previously told ANI that AR Rahman’s Oscar-winning song “Jai Ho” was originally made for his film but hedid not use it. “That ‘Jai Ho’ song was made for Yuvvraaj. We recorded it but after recording, I felt that it won’t work for us in that situation. Rahman gave the song to that (Slumdog Millionaire) film. It is his composition.” Ghai also told The Times of India that the song was originally going to be filmed on Zayed Khan but felt that the number was “slightly too soft and subtle for the aggressive character.” The song was sung by Sukhwinder Singh with lyrics by Gulzar and became an international sensation after it appeared in Slumdog Millionaire.

AR Rahman won two Oscars for his work on Slumdog Millionaire. He won Best Original Song for “Jai Ho” and Best Original Score at the 81st Academy Awards.
