While discussions about the use of Ramayana references in Singham Again continue, director Rohit Shetty and actor Ajay Devgn, who plays the lead role in the film, recently shared their views on making movies with religious themes. When asked if he would consider making a religious film, Rohit expressed uncertainty, stating that it’s hard to predict what could offend people, a sentiment that Ajay agreed with. The two also reflected on a moment from the iconic 1975 action-adventure film Sholay, directed by Ramesh Sippy, noting that such a scene would be unthinkable in today’s climate.

In a conversation with social media influencer Ranveer Allahbadia, Rohit explained, “We won’t know what people might object to or what would make them feel bad. There is a scene in Sholay where Dharmendra stands behind a Lord Shiva idol and talks pretending to be god. We can’t do such a scene today,” to which Ajay concurred.

Rohit further commented that in today’s environment, he can’t create a character like Laxman Chopra (Shreyas Talpade) from the Golmaal series, who stammers, without being accused of mocking a person with a disability. “If I were to make the (Golmaal) movies today, I will get trolled saying I am making fun of stammering. That’s the difference (between then and now). Even if that’s not the intention… he is one among the heroes in the film. Now we are very scared and judgemental. We have to constantly speculate as to if people will get offended about something or not. The Golmaal movies have a cult following now and we are not laughing at that person but the situations he has found himself in. Nonetheless, if the movie were to release today, I would definitely face trolling,” he pointed out.

Starring Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Sanjay Mishra, Vrajesh Hirjee, and Mukesh Tiwari in key roles, Rohit has directed four Golmaal films — Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006), Golmaal Returns (2008), Golmaal 3 (2010), and Golmaal Again (2017). In 2022, the director made Cirkus, starring Ranveer Singh, Pooja Hegde, and Jacqueline Fernandez, which serves as a prequel spin-off to the Golmaal films.
