Siddharth, Chandani Sasha on Pushpa 2 monopolising cinema halls: ‘Money talks…’
During a roundtable hosted by Galatta Plus, producers discussed how films like Pushpa don't leave screens for films like All We Imagine As Light.
Producers talk about Pushpa 2 monopolising theatres across India. (Photo: Pushpa/X)Pushpa 2 recently earned the ire of filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane, who slammed its makers for ‘forcing’ multiplexes into contracts that prevented them from showing any other movie during the first ten days of its release. The issue took a serious turn when an anonymous source from a popular multiplex chain told Zoom that showing any other film during this period could lead to penalties.
Slamming the makers of Pushpa 2: The Rule, Vikramaditya raised concerns for films like All We Imagine As Light, which is nominated for prestigious awards like Golden Globes.
The issue was once again discussed between film producers on Galatta Plus Round Table 2024. Chandni Sasha, who was also part of the round table, credited marketing for Pushpa 2’s success. She said, “I think the whole concept is about how are they marketing it. Pushpa went right into Bihar and had an event there. They were spending such a huge amount in publicity.”
She even mentioned the distribution platforms only running Pushpa 2. She said, “The distribution platforms that they have got, the whole of India every screen and show was only Pushpa. Now, the question we need to ask ourselves here is: ‘Does this make a pan-India film?'”
She took the example of Barroz, and called it the real pan-India film. She said, “Don’t get me wrong but it the real pan-India and pan-world movie. It is a celebration of Indian cinema to the next level. Why I say this is because it has an ensemble cast from Portugal, Africa, India and technicians are a mix from the world.”
Actor Siddharth too shared his point of view and said, “Everybody goes to temple to meet god. And in Telugu cinema, we call our audience our god. Now some people stand in line to get to see god for five seconds and then there are VIP tickets, where you get a lengthy time with god. Now, whose prayer is more important or which is the good prayer? This is the same effort of producers, just because I don’t have a VIP ticket doesn’t mean I should not be allowed to see god. Similarly, if only one film runs across all theatres that means might is right. So the question is ‘Is the system fair?’ Money talks.”
