Shekhar Suman and his son Adhyayan Suman are currently gearing up for the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Shekhar has now opened up about how Sanjay’s praise for Adhyayan made him cry a lot. He said that it was only the second time in his life he shed tears, the first being when he lost his son Aayush.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Shekhar spoke about Sanjay’s words of praise for Adhyayan. He said, “The way he was praising him, which I thought was long overdue. It was coming from a person whose validation means everything for me. That’s why I was crying. If it was a normal director or a normal film, I would be like ‘chalo acha hai.’ The person who is a perfectionist, who knows what is good and bad, if he speaks superlatives about your son, then 14 years of pain, it was like catharsis.”
He continued, “Only two times in my life I have cried like this. One is when I lost my elder son Aayush. I lost a part of my heart, who was dearest to me. I cried while beating my head to the ground. I didn’t want to live after that. I was lifeless. The world was a façade where I would smile and laugh, either for appearances or out of economic necessity because I had to run my household.”
Shekhar also recalled an incident of how he visited several astrologers after the death of his son. He said, “When Aayush passed away, we consulted a lot of astrologers and asked ‘why did this happen to us?’ They said worse things have happened to people. Somebody said ‘he will come in front of you one day and give you his darshan.’ We believed it.”
He added, “My wife went to Vishwanath temple. I was busy with elections. She called and started crying. I immediately asked, ‘Did you meet Aayush?’ She said, ‘He just came and met me for half a second.’ She blacked out.”
Shekhar said that when his wife was giving alms to someone near the temple, the person complained on receiving only Rs 10 and said ‘itne se mera kya hoga?’ Shekhar said that Aayush used to say this a lot during his days in the hospital when he was given little food due to medications. When his wife turned to see the person, she saw their son and before giving him all the money, that person had disappeared.
Heeramandi is all set to release on May 1 on Netflix.
