Veteran actor Sharat Saxena recently revealed why he decided to quit the Hindi film industry and venture into the South Indian film industry. The actor said that he only used to get cast for the fight scenes in Hindi movies and he did those for 25-30 years. One day, he decided to do something substantial and quit Bollywood. He found his footing in the Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema.

In an interview with Rajshri, Sharat said, “I had started working in the South film industry because I was not getting any work in Bombay (now Mumbai). I used to only get fight scenes and I did not like my face. When I used to get ready in the morning, I used to curse myself looking at the mirror, because now I am going to get beaten up. We used to do the introduction scene of the heroes. I knew now the hero will come, beat me up and declare himself a hero and go ahead in the movie. That was my job for 25-30 years.”

Then, one day, the veteran star checked with his wife the amount of money they have. When his wife told him they have enough funds to survive for a year even if he doesn’t work, Sharat decided to leave the Hindi film industry. The actor added, “One day, I asked my wife, ‘Do we have enough money?’ She said, ‘Yes, we have.’ She told me that with the amount we had, we could survive for a year, at least. From that day, I stopped working on Hindi films. However, with the grace of god, after two-three days, I got a call from Kamal Hassan’s office and he gave me a role in the Tamil film Gunaah. The pay and the role, both were good.”

The actor said that while working on the film with Kamal, he met Ramkumar Ganesan, who approached him for his movie. Sharat said that he took the offer and worked alongside Rajinikanth in the film. Sharat also met Chiranjeevi while shooting for the Hindi film Gunda Raj and got his break into Telugu films. “I had 10-15 films in Telugu. Then I worked with Nagarjuna sir as well. I have also done 5-6 Malayalam films of Priyadarshan.”

Sharat Saxena has featured in over 300 films in his career. Some of his popular films include Mr India, Agneepath, Tridev, Baabul, Ready, Bodyguard and Tamil film Vivegam among others.

In the past, the actor has spoken about how the film industry chews up actors once they hit a certain age. “Jahaan aap budhe lagne lage, you are thrown out of the film industry (The moment you start looking old, you are thrown out of the film industry),” he told Indian Express. “This is a young people’s industry. Everybody has to be young. You are old or not, doesn’t matter. You have to look young. It is a crime to be an old man here,” he said.
