In the last few years, the conversation around the increasing personnel in an actor’s entourage has gained steam, but even before this, some actors walked around with their entourage and made them represent them, even on a film set. Recently, Shahid Kapoor’s co-actor from his 2013 film R Rajkumar, Vijay Patkar, shared that for an entire week, Shahid wouldn’t show up on set before his shot and the director was made to discuss his scenes with the manager. So much so that even the scenes were being narrated to the manager, who would then go and narrate it to Shahid.

In a chat with Filmymntra Media, Vijay shared, “I was doing R Rajkumar. For seven days, Prabhudeva would narrate the scenes to Shahid’s manager and the manager would then go and relay those scenes to Shahid Kapoor.” Vijay said that this went on for seven days, and on the eight day, Prabhudeva put his foot down and put a stop to this practice. “On the eighth day, Prabhudeva went to Shahid and asked him, ‘What is happening here? Should I narrate it to your manager? How will convey what I want from the scene? I can’t work like this’,” he recalled.

Vijay said that since Prabhudeva is an “old school” technician, he did not appreciate this style of working. “From the eighth day, Shahid came on the set and he would talk to the writer and the director,” Vijay said.

In R Rajkumar, Shahid starred alongside Sonakshi Sinha and Sonu Sood. The film had songs like “Gandi Baat” and “Saree Ke Fall Sa” which were quite popular at the time. Before R Rajkumar, Shahid had a string of flops – Dil Bole Hadippa, Chance Pe Dance, Paathshaala, Milenge Milenege, Mausam, Phata Poster Nikla Hero and Teri Meri Kahaani. Soon after R Rajkumar, Shahid was seen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider.

Talking about his many failures, Shahid told Hindustan Times that after the success of the Prabhudeva film, he “felt a certain sense of relief.” In the same chat, when Shahid was asked if Prabhudeva had brought his career back on track, much like what he did for Salman Khan with Wanted, he said, “He has a knack for understanding what will make people clap and whistle. He promises an entertaining experience, and that’s what the audience gets. This film is a reflection of that theory.”
