Salman Khan would cry listening to Tere Naam title track after breakup with Aishwarya Rai, says Sameer Anjaan: ‘He would call Himesh Reshammiya, make him sing’
Sameer Anjaan said it had become a ritual for Salman Khan to call Himesh, make him sing the song before giving a shot, and then cry over it.

Back in 2002, Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai’s highly publicised break-up dominated headlines. Shortly after their split, Salman took on the lead role in Satish Kaushik’s Tere Naam, where he portrayed a heartbroken and obsessive lover. According to renowned lyricist Sameer Anjaan, Salman’s personal heartbreak deeply influenced his performance and contributed to the film’s emotional intensity. As his heartbreak was still new, he would often breakdown listening to the film’s title track, hoping it would reach Aishwarya.
In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, Sameer Anjaan revealed, “We didn’t write the title track of Tere Naam with Salman Khan in mind. But after his breakup with Aishwarya Rai, the song became his personal anthem of heartbreak. Before filming scenes for that song, Salman would call Himesh Reshammiya, ask him to sing it, and then break down in tears.”
Sameer continued, “Salman was hurting. His wounds were still fresh. Every time on set, before giving a shot, Himesh would sing, and Salman would cry. He wanted the song—especially the line ‘Kyun kisiko wafa ke badle wafa nahi milti’—to reach Aishwarya, to let her feel his pain.”
Sameer Anjaan also spoke about another high-profile Bollywood breakup that affected a film’s production—Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor during the shoot of Milenge Milenge (2010). The couple parted ways before filming was completed, causing concern for producer Boney Kapoor.
Recalling the situation, Sameer said, “When Shahid and Kareena broke up, one song was still left to shoot. Boney Kapoor was stressed, unsure if the film would ever be completed. He came to me and asked if I could write a song that would emotionally resonate with both actors—something that felt like their own story.”
The result was the soulful track “Kuch Toh Baaki Hai”. Sameer shared, “When Boney heard the lyrics, he was convinced. The song helped get the film back on track, and they finally completed the shoot.”
Milenge Milenge underwent multiple delays post their breakup with the couple refusing to dub the film together. The production that started in 2004, took nearly 6 years to hit the screen. Meanwhile, Kareena and Shahid broke up sometime in 2007 while they were filming Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met.
