Years after their split, Salim-Javed have developed a ‘stronger bond’, says Arbaaz Khan: ‘We never thought dad, Javed saab would sit together’
Decades after their split, Salim-Javed have repaired their relationship. Arbaaz Khan says as kids, they never thought this day would come.

Salim-Javed, the veteran screenwriting duo, wrote some of the most popular Hindi films of the 1970s. After creating the ‘angry young man’ and writing movies like Deewar, Sholay, Trishul, Don among many others, the partnership went sour and the duo split up in the early 1980s. Now, Salim Khan’s son, actor Arbaaz Khan has said that the two are in a much better place now and have rebuilt their relationship.
Arbaaz, in a chat with Bollywood Bubble, said that as kids, they would have never imagined that Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar would ever become friends again. He said that the two are “in a very good space” now and often speak on the phone. “We, as kids, would have never thought that Javed saab and dad would ever sit across each other and make conversation,” he said and recalled a recent incident where Javed Akhtar called him and insisted on coming over to meet Salim Khan because he was not keeping well.
“Javed saab came home and met him and spent two hours with him. It all seems so wonderful,” he said and added that time heals everything. “People change, people forget and forgive, and they move on. And they make much stronger bonds. They communicate very often now. They speak over the phone very often and more so because dad is a little older than Javed saab so Javed saab keeps asking about dad’s wellbeing,” he said.
Recalling the time when the split happened, Arbaaz said that he was 14-years-old. He said that prior to the split, the two families and the kids of both the families would often visit each other. “We used to meet Javed saab, Javed saab used to come home and we used to go there. Of course, Zoya and Farhan are a little younger than us but they were still kids then. We were very friendly at that time,” he said. He added that the kids were “very affected” when the split happened.
“When the partnership splits, people don’t know which way to go. Initially, that direction was towards Javed saab so those 3-4 years of his were big struggle for him,” he said. Arbaaz added that despite the professional separation between the two, the kids have always been cordial with each other. “Whenever the kids have met, or we’ve met Javed saab, we’ve always been very cordial and we’ve always been very nice to each other. There has ever been any animosity or any anger or trying to prove something to the other. And time is a great healer,” he said.
