Saif Ali Khan recalls bonding with Ajay Devgn over drinks in the jungle, dismisses his own performance: ‘Voice was nasal, wasn’t grounded’
Kachche Dhaage, which recently completed 25 years, featured Saif Ali Khan and Ajay Devgn as two polar opposite half-brothers.

For a film titled Kachche Dhaage, the 1999 drama led to some strong bonding. Actor Saif Ali Khan has revealed how he and his co-star Ajay Devgn broke the ice and became friends while shooting for the Milan Luthria directorial, which completed 25 years recently. The action-thriller featured Saif and Ajay as two polar opposite half-brothers. In an interview with Zoom, Saif said how the two formed a strong bond, which led to a good on-screen chemistry.
The actor said neither of them spoke for a while on the first day, and were “comfortably quiet,” that is, till Ajay intervened and said, “‘I think we will get along fine.’ And we have gotten along very well.”
Calling Ajay as “amazing”, Saif said he was extremely funny and friendly as he recalled the film’s outdoor shoot. “We spent a lot of time together. Handcuffed on the set and driving around Rajasthan. Sometimes we would be driving for eight hours at a stretch. We were young … We shot long hours and went out for drinks in the jungle after the wrap-up… I honestly feel that kind of thing won’t happen anymore.”
Though Saif considers Kachche Dhaage a “special film,” he doesn’t rate his performance in it highly. The actor said he wasn’t good in the film, but the off-set memories–Ajay’s ‘crazy’ stunt of being dragged under a real train, him performing some ‘cool’ jumps–make it one of his most cherished experiences. “I don’t really like myself in Kachche Dhaage… the voice is nasal and thin and I wasn’t grounded as an actor… but it wasn’t too bad,” he added. Kachche Dhaage also starred Manisha Koirala and Namrata Shirodkar.
On the work front, Ajay is gearing up for the release of his next, Shaitaan. The supernatural horror thriller will release on March 8 and will be followed by more Ajay Devgn films, including Maidaan, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha and Singham Again.
Saif, meanwhile, will feature in the Telugu action drama Devara: Part 1, headlined by Jr NTR and also starring Janhvi Kapoor.
