Akshay Kumar’s Rustom or Hrithik Roshan’s Mohenjo Daro: Which one will audience and box office choose this Independence Day, with both their release date being August 12? While one is a magnificent period drama set in the Indus Valley Civilisation, the other is a taut thriller based on an infamous case involving a Navy officer.
While Rustom stars Ileana D’Cruz and Esha Gupta besides Akshay; Mohenjo Daro is the Bollywood debut of Pooja Hegde. However, Akshay’s film is a much smaller film than Hrithik’s. The difference in their cost is shocking. According to a Midday report, Rustom has been made at the cost of about Rs 50 crore while Mohenjo Daro’s budget is almost double at approximately Rs 100 crore.
Akshay has perfected the art of starring in films which are low on budget but high on story – Airlift, and Baby being a few examples. Hrithik is making a comeback of sorts after Bang Bang released two years ago.
The release that both films are getting reflects their budget. Backed by Disney, Mohenjo Daro is releasing on about 2300-2500 screen. In comparison, Rustom gets 2000 screens. This is the similar kind of divide which was seen when Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale clashed with Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone’s Bajirao Mastani in 2015. Dilwale got a higher number of screens but was panned by critics and people alike. Its box office collections bore the brunt as people just chose to watch Bajirao Mastani.

Shah Rukh later decided to pull out of Sultan vs Raees clash, leaving the slot open for Salman Khan in 2016. He later said that box office clashes should be avoided till India has enough screens to accommodate two big films.
