If there was one Indian cinema icon that truly embraced the vagaries of the digital era, it was the late actor-filmmaker Rishi Kapoor. He was caustic, sardonic, and gave off the vibes of someone who couldn’t care less about what the world thought of him. He was the perfect embodiment of the antithesis of the manufactured social media persona. He was all heart, and of course, this also meant, he often ran into hot water for his comments and responses to criticisms and trolls.

But he was the last of a tribe, as in, the last of the actors who were refreshingly candid, and always made for the perfect anecdote. In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, actor-filmmaker Ananth Mahadevan recollected an incident that reflected the extreme straight-forwardness of Rishi Kapoor.

“Well, he is an honest person,” said Ananth as he narrated an incident that happened when he visited the legend at his residence. “I don’t want to name the filmmaker or the film, but Rishi Kapoor was livid. He was constantly saying that he tried his best to dissuade Ranbir from doing that film. I told him ‘don’t do it, don’t do it, this film will not run.’ But he didn’t listen,” said Ananth, adding that Rishi Kapoor had no qualms in telling directors to their faces that their films would be a flop, and there was no use making it.

“He was like that. You call it honesty. You call it pure delight. That was Rishi Kapoor,” said Ananth Mahadevan, who was recently in the news for claiming that Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies had many similarities with his film, Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol.
