Actor Rhea Chakraborty has often opened up about the heavy impact of the 2020 Sushant Singh Rajput case on her and her family. At a recent NDTV event, she recalled the emotional ordeal that they went through and how even after being given a clean chit by the CBI, her perspective towards life changed completely. Rhea also spoke about her experience of being in the jail for 28 days, and even giving a dance performance on the day of her bail.

If a film was being made in jail and she is the director, who would she cast? “I wouldn’t want such an unlucky thing for any of my colleagues. You don’t need to cast, because many heroes and heroines have gone and come back from the jail in real life.”

Rhea further revealed that you tend to miss a lot of things in jail. “You realise everything – what you had, when you were thinking there was nothing. Because, vahan toh kuch bhi nahi milta hai. You can’t take your parents for granted as they keep asking you if you’ve had food. There’s no one to take care of you in jail. But, I missed my family the most,” she said.

The Jalebi (2018) actor continued, “You become a different person after going to jail. Your perspective towards life changes. You stop thinking what people think about you because that will surely cause depression. You get away from public perception. Secondly, you start valuing food a lot. Ghar ka dal chawal bhi pizza se kam feel nahi hota hai (Even homemade dal-rice feel equivalent to pizza). You also realise that you only have 3-4 friends in the world, rest everyone else is not your friend.”

Rhea Chakraborty was in jail for 28 days, before the Bombay High Court granted her bail. Talking about her experience inside as an actor, she shared, “People asked me to dance for them. I did naagin dance on the day of my bail. I thought that we never know when I’ll meet them next and if I can give them a moment of happiness, then why not? Most of those women are innocent and hopeless in such under-trial prisons.”

“I used to have a diary in jail, in which the first line I wrote was, ‘People inside jail are way better than people outside. I was correct. There’s no society and rules inside. Everyone is away from their family, have been inside since years. Even a samosa feels like a billion dollar cheque to them there.

When asked about getting a clean chit for all charges by the CBI, she replied, “Everyone in my house cried that day. I hugged my brother and broke down. When I looked at my parents, I realised we had all changed forever. We were no longer the same carefree family. That moment altered us permanently.”

The actor further added that when her mother first heard the news from media, she refused to believe it and was relieved only after a confirmation from her lawyer. “When I got a clean chit, I wasn’t happy. At the core of it, I knew someone very close to me was gone, and nothing could change that. But I was relieved for my parents. They live in society and constantly face people. For them, things had become very difficult. I thought maybe now they could move around a little more freely,” she said.

“People said he did not go because of you. I always knew I hadn’t done anything. But even when the clean chit came, I couldn’t feel happy. I was only happy for my parents and their reputation. But, we were no longer the same carefree family, it can’t come back. That moment altered all of us completely, for our entire life,” Rhea shared.

Rhea explained that only she felt upset because she lost someone very close to her. “Everyone thought that only they were grieving, but they shouldn’t forget that the person who was the closest to him suffered the biggest loss. I wasn’t given a normal chance to grieve at that time. Not even a single day passes by where I think I am fine and my grieving process has ended. I also felt angry initially that people couldn’t understand this basic human emotion. Then, I understood that my grief is private,” she said.
