Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par remake is an official remake of Campeones, Reddit spots similarities

Sitaare Zameen Par is not only the spiritual sequel of Aamir Khan's 2007 directorial debut Taare Zameen Par, but also the official Hindi remake of the 2018 Spanish sports comedy, Campeones.

Aamir Khan Productions unveiled the trailer of RS Prasanna’s coming-of-age sports comedy Sitaare Zameen Par on Tuesday evening. While it’s a spiritual sequel to Aamir Khan’s 2007 directorial debut Taare Zameen Par, the lesser known fact is that it’s an official remake of Javier Fesser’s 2018 Spanish film Campeones.

A Redditor compared the trailers of both the films, and pointed out similarities. These include Aamir’s character of the coach drinking while driving and bumping his car into a police van in the middle of the road, just like Javier Gutierrez’s character in the original. Both are then penalized by the court to train a bunch of mentally challenged kids for a basketball tournament.

Other similarities include the coach’s character throwing the basketball straight into the face of one of the kids, as the others shield their faces in the next shot. The bouncing boards of the protagonist are the same too — his friend and his mother — but his wife (played by Genelia D’Souza in Sitaare Zameen Par) — doesn’t feature in the trailer of the Spanish original.

Looks like SZP is a frame-by-frame copy of the Spanish hit Campeones(2023).

“Look at his filmography again. He has remade the godfather, kramer vs kramer, on the waterfront, forrest gump. A lot of them have scenes lifted frame by frame. I still love Ghulam, akele hum etc. The point is he’s had a lot of practice,” a fan wrote, referring to Aamir’s films Aatank Hi Aatank (1995), Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995), Ghulam (1998), and Laal Singh Chaddha respectively.

However, several others also defended Aamir. “Official remake hai bhai toh of course usme konsi nayi baat hai (If it’s an official remake, then what’s the harm?),” wrote a Redditor. “You’re acting like people in India have all seen Champions and it’s a massive hit here. No one gives a shit if it’s a remake as no one has seen the original, all that matters is if it’s a good film,” argued another.

Campeones has already been remade in English as Bobby Farrelly’s Champions in 2023, starring Woody Harrelson as the coach. Meanwhile, Sitaare Zameen Par, which will launch 10 newcomers as the mentally challenged kids, also stars Dolly Ahluwalia as Aamir’s mother. Sitaare Zameen Par is slated to release in cinemas on June 20.
