Anita Advani met Rajesh Khanna when she was just a teenager, and he was an established movie star. In a recent interview, she recalled their first meeting and said that even though he wouldn’t be very expressive about his love for her, she knew that he couldn’t live without her. Anita said that Rajesh needed her to be around him all the time, so much so that when she started her cafe, he created a “havoc,” and she had to shut it down.

In a chat with Mid-day, Anita recalled their first meeting and shared that she was just a teenager when her friend’s uncle offered to take her to a film set. They missed Rajesh Khanna at the shoot, so they landed up at his house and got an audience with him through a connection. Anita said she was “very impressed” when she first saw him, and when the uncle asked if she could attend a shoot, the look that Rajesh gave her made her “nervous.”

“He asked, ‘Acha, do you want to see the shoot?’ Then he looked and checked me through. I got so nervous, my heartbeat was running amok and I didn’t know what to do. Nevertheless, he abruptly turned. That imprint is still on my mind. I can still visualise it,” she recalled. Anita started dating Rajesh much later in life, although they kept in touch for many years.

When asked if Rajesh was a “romantic at heart,” Anita said, “Absolutely.” She added, “He wasn’t very vocal but his actions could speak volumes.” When asked what he would do to express his love, Anita recalled that he would make tea and clean the washroom. “He wouldn’t say I love you all the time. He wasn’t that type. I could make out that he couldn’t live without me. Like if I went out, he would call me 20 times. I opened a cafe and he created havoc,” she said. The interviewer asked if she had to shut the cafe, and Anita nodded affirmatively.

In an older interview with Rediff, Anita said that she first met the star when she was 13 and soon after their meeting, he started showering her with lots of attention. In the same chat, she said that he would hit her after he got drunk, and was a difficult man to live with. “He was a difficult man to live with. After a drink or two, he could be rude. You had to really know his moves and manage him. I learnt to deal with him. Earlier I would fight and argue with him. But he made me understand. He told me ‘Even if I am wrong, just keep quiet,” she said.
