Ranbir Kapoor was 25 years old when he made his acting debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. But Ranbir wasn’t the first choice for the role. Recently, Prateik Babbar revealed that Bhansali had actually contemplated hiring him for Saawariya. Prateik, who was a teenager then, said that he got to know about this opportunity a couple of years later, because he was in a rehabilitation centre.

In a chat with Bollywood Bubble, Prateik was asked if the rumour about him being chosen for Saawariya was true, and he said, “Unfortunately, I was in rehab at the time. I was 18-years-old. I was in rehab. Mr Bhansali had called our landline.” When asked if Bhansali was aware of him being at a rehab, Prateik said that the filmmaker had no idea about it. He also said that Bhansali probably did not even know how old he was at the time. “He wasn’t aware (about rehab). And I don’t think he was aware how old I was either because I was very young,” he said.

Prateik was living with his maternal grandparents at the time. He is the son of late actor Smita Patil, who passed away during childbirth, and actor Raj Babbar. Talking about the missed opportunity, Prateik said, “I came to know a year or two later. My grandfather told me, ‘Sanjay Leela Bhansali had called for you but you were in the hospital then’.”

In the same chat, Prateik spoke about his problems with substance abuse. He said, “The grandparents saw the worst of me in those last few years. I was a raging addict. My grandmother died seeing me an addict. That’s something I regret. I wish she could see the man I have become today.”

Prateik eventually made his debut in a supporting role in Abbas Tyrewala’s 2008 film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. He shared that he went to film school after working on the film but was kicked out of because of his drug habit.
