‘Phenk mat’: Abhijeet claims he suggested Shah Rukh Khan’s singing portion in ‘I Am The Best’ song, Lalit Pandit declares it was SRK’s idea

As soon as Abhijeet Bhattacharya claimed that it was his idea to make Shah Rukh Khan dub for 'I am the best', Lalit Pandit declared that he was exaggerating and it was indeed Shah Rukh's idea to dub it by himself.

Shah Rukh Khan has had many memorable songs in his nearly 33 year long film career and many of his songs in the 1990s were crooned by singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya. During a recent episode of Indian Idol, singer Abhijeet claimed that while recording the song “I Am The Best” for Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, he came up with the idea that Shah Rukh should himself record the last bit of the song where he sings “Oh yes yes, sing it again.” As soon as Abhijeet claimed this as his idea, composer Lalit Pandit, who was also present on the show, said that this was actually Shah Rukh’s idea as he was present during the recording.

During the episode, Abhijeet performed the song with one of the contestants and then shared, “When we were recording it, I did a portion on top of the chorus where I said ‘Oh yeah, I am the best.’ Then I suggested to Lalit that Shah Rukh should do it. And within one hour, Shah Rukh was there and he did it.” Lalit laughed as soon as he heard this and said, “He has reversed the story now.”

Lalit Pandit, who composed the song with his brother Jatin Pandit, said that Shah Rukh Khan was present at the recording and insisted that he remembered each and every bit about recording his songs. Abhijeet was mildly offended by this and asked, “Maine phenka? (Did I lie?)” Lalit said that he was sharing the conversation that Shah Rukh had with him during the recording and Abhijeet, meanwhile, kept repeating, “It’s very embarrassing.”

Lalit then recalled that Shah Rukh wanted something extra in the last bit and after multiple attempts by Abhijeet, he offered to do it himself and did it in one take. “Shah Rukh kept saying ask him to do it in a certain way. Do you remember we had some problem in ‘I am the best’ portion? We kept rehearsing it more and more. Then Shah Rukh said ‘I will only do this last bit.’ So I said, ‘Yes please, go and do it’ and he did it in one take. He knew the style he wanted it in so it was simple for him. I guess, so he did it in one take,” he recalled.

As Abhijeet kept repeatedly asking if he was lying, Lalit laughed him off and said, “Yaar main baitha hu, tab toh mat phenk (Don’t lie when I am sitting right here).”

In the last few weeks, Abhijeet Bhattacharya has made it clear that he does not like his songs being credited as “Shah Rukh’s songs.” He also said that he was “hurt” by this and Shah Rukh was also aware of the same.
